Purple Tomatoes

The Somewhat Artistic Ramblings of a (poofy) Southern Gal

  • Purple tomatoes?

Well the reason I chose purple tomatoes is because growing up we always had a garden (don't ask me if I liked working in the garden; that's a story for another day). My mom always grew waaaaayyyy too many tomato plants and sometimes we'd eat only tomatoes for dinner. Well, my favorite variety out of all the different kinds we grew? You guessed it: Purple Tomatoes.

Hello World!

Posted by Leenda on August 2, 2007

I have decided to join the ever-expanding world of altered artists who blog. I’m not sure if I’ll end up having anything fascinating enough to say, but if I don’t start, I’ll never know. I know the main idea of a blog is to upload pieces of art as I complete them (preferably with intermittent pictures along the way). But those who know me realize it’s a miracle if I manage to get a pic of the finished piece uploaded, much less interim photos. As such, please bare with me when all you can see is the finished product.

I’m including two pieces I finished in the past couple of weeks.

Apollo–god of music

This one is only the second large collage I’ve done. It’s a canvas board. The background started out crackle, but the crackles didn’t come through as much as I had hoped, so I ended up throwing a few other layers on there. There is some glazing, distressing, and some PearlEx on there. Unfortunately, the true dimensional nature of the background just can’t come through in the scan; in person, it really looks wonderful. Oh, and the pic of Apollo is a packing tape transfer. That one took forever. [Note to self: That's probably why you're supposed to use contact paper for large images.]

Harmony in Melody

This one is also a canvas board collage, but it’s a smaller piece. The background incorporates some of the same techniques as the Apollo piece, but did not start with a pseudo crackle first, so it’s not as thick. There is no transfer on this one. I did try to stamp the butterflies with pearlex (worked fine with Apollo, but that must have been because of his “diety”) and they didn’t show, so I ended up overstamping the left one. I think the effect it lends (a sort of halo) turns out very nicely though. I sure hope the recipient (my friend Cyndi–hi Cyndi) likes it in person.
